In a career spanning more than 20 years, Darcey Bussell achieved legendary status in the dance world and earned a place in the hearts of the British public. In 1985 at the age of 16, she was accepted at the Royal Ballet's National School in London, graduating to Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet two years later. In 1989 she became the youngest ever British ballerina to be given the honour of Principal dancer, and her career continued to grow. She was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1995 and then a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2006. In 2006 Darcey announced her retirement with her final performance of MacMillan's Song of the Earth in June of the following year.
